The Method

The Feldenkrais (FEL den krice) Method® is a remarkable muscular-skeletal reeducation of our whole way of moving.  The method uses gentle, precise movement explorations to expand and improve how we move in our daily lives.  It evokes these beneficial changes by accessing and harnessing the extraordinary repatterning power of the human central nervous system that each of us is endowed with.  The skilled use of the method's neurologically meaningful processes allows pain and stiffness to recede and our optimal movement to effortlessly emerge.

A Feldenkrais teacher looks at each individual as a whole person, a particular expression of life that is precious and unique.  Students coming to Cynthia are looking for ease and options in that expression.  Understanding that a person’s movement patterns developed to meet specific challenges in life allows Cynthia to offer a rich learning environment where new options for movement can flourish, without diminishing the past value of older patterns.  As new possibilities open up, a person's self image also shifts to include greater awareness of personal potential and pleasurable spontaneity in movement.

The Feldenkrais Method is grounded in a deep understanding of neurophysiology, the principles of physics and bio-mechanics, empirical studies of learning and human development, and the importance of the student-teacher rapport.  Its applications, both from private and class lessons, go beyond improving our movement to a deep well-being that comes from an enhancement of sensing, feeling and thinking in all areas of life.
